The Rockwood Residence is an outstanding example of the residential use of concrete in a true all-concrete structure. In addition to its impressive architectural design, the residence employs perhaps the first successful use of pumice concrete in a structural application in Oregon. Developed by Schommer & Sons, the pumice concrete in the Rockwood Residence is stronger than conventional concrete, lightweight, and superior in insulation value. In addition, the pumice concrete offers increased seismic resistance and is fireproof.
The Rockwood Residence represents state-of-the-art residential concrete construction and has achieved national and international recognition. It is listed as a Master Work of Architecture, and in 1987 Schommer & Sons received an award of excellence from the Oregon Concrete and Aggregate Producers Association for building this unique home.
