BridgePort Brewing
Hawthorne Street Ale House
In the fall of 1996, BridgePort Brewing of Portland chose Schommer and Sons to make improvements to a neighborhood brewpub in Southeast Portland.

The project consisted of the interior demolition of a prior tavern space and the installation of a brewpub with cooking and eating facilities. The project required significant structural modifications to the existing building, and the coordination of food service installation in conjunction with a 3,000-pound wood-fired pizza oven. Venting the kitchen space required creative solutions, as the kitchen exhaust moves from the first floor space to the roof through second floor residential apartments.

Because the brewpub is in a historic building, the project was subject to the requirements of the Oregon Historic Buildings Division. This design included operable street side windows opening directly onto the pedestrian walkway and maintenance of the historic building facade on Hawthorne.

Schommer & Sons completed this project on time and on budget, and the building remained fully functional during the entire construction process. The resulting finished product has al-lowed BridgePort Brewing to expand into the Hawthorne market with a very intimate, neighborhood pub attracting both family and general clientele.
